Maroondah Hospital to install a Hologic bone densitometry system 24th June, 2010

Eastern Health at Maroondah Hospital will install the Hologic bone densitometry system, the Discovery W, in June, 2010.  The system will be operational and open for bookings from 24th June, 2010.

The Discovery W offers you a single platform to support a broad spectrum of patients over a lifetime of care. It will not only provide you with the best diagnostic tools to support the early detection and treatment of osteoporosis, but offers the most comprehensive platform for bone health assessment, obesity, visualization of calcification in the abdominal aorta (that may indicate heart disease) and many other clinical applications.

Hologic systems are equipped with fan‐beam technology that uses a high‐density array of detectors and can acquire two‐dimensional (2‐D) X‐rays in a single linear scan.  This leads to high precision scans in a fast scanning time meaning less time on the table for the patient.

Hologic's Advanced Body Composition Assessment produces colour images displaying the distribution of fat, lean tissue, and bone, translating the information into an easy to interpret report for improved patient management and counselling.  Its quick scan time (as little as three minutes) and patient-friendly reporting makes Hologic DXA systems the gold standard in body composition analysis in clinical medicine and in research.

High Definition Instant Vertebral Assessment (IVA‐HD) capabilities allow quick assessment of vertebral fractures and also allow scanning for abdominal aortic calcifications (AAC) - a strong predictor of coronary heart disease, stroke, and other cardiovascular disease.

Hologic scanners have a patented Internal Reference System which provides continuous pixel-by-pixel calibration and assures precise BMD results every time (<1%).

Hologic does not have to account for patient thickness or weight and the data sets they get is 5 X greater than the nearest competitor and so more comprehensive. Hologic always store raw data, not computed values and the analysis is automated. The increased weight limit (204kg) and c-arm clearance (61cm) enables scanning of most patients regardless of body habitus.
90% of clinical and pharmaceutical trials are done on Hologic systems for the above key reasons. The latest and largest trial ever undertaken worldwide was Nhanes III. This study was funded by the US government and Hologic was selected as the sole provider because of the precision and stability offered by its systems.
