Medicare Australia welcomes midwives and nurse practitioners

From 1 November 2010, (subject to passage of legislation) midwives and nurse practitioners will be able to access certain items in the MBS and prescribe certain PBS medicines.

Registration for provider and prescriber numbers begins in July 2010.

As part of the 2009 Budget, the government has also introduced the Midwife Professional Indemnity (Commonwealth Contribution) Scheme 2009 Bill and the Midwife Professional Indemnity (Run-off Cover Support Payment) 2009 Bill.

Under the proposed change, which will be effective from 1 July 2010, a contracted professional indemnity insurer will provide insurance to eligible privately practising midwives. The insurance is intended to be available so eligible midwives can be appropriately covered from 1 July 2010, in line with proposed new requirements of the National Accreditation and Registration Scheme.
