New nursing titles for Victoria from 1 July 2010

From 1 July 2010 practitioners of the Nursing and Midwifery professions across Australia will have to meet the same requirements to be registered and their registration will be recognised in all States and Territories.

The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) has been established and from 1 July 2010 this Board will replace the Nurses Board of Victoria. The NMBA has now issued a substantial number of standards and guidelines that can be viewed on their website at http://www.nursingmidwiferyboard.gov.au/index.php

The NMBA has now issued a document explaining how this will affect the nursing nomenclature used in Victoria, importantly this includes:

  • Persons with Victorian registration in Divisions 1, 3 or 4 will be titled 'registered nurse' under section 52 of the National Law
  • Persons with Victorian registration in Division 1 with an endorsement under s.21 as qualified to practise as a 'midwife', under the Health Professions Registration Act 2005 (Vic) - will have general registration as a 'midwife', on the Register of Midwives AND General registration as a 'registered nurse'
  • Persons with Victorian registration in Division 1 with a condition that limits their practice to midwifery only - General registration as a 'midwife', on the Register of Midwives, under section 52 of the National Law
  • Persons with Victorian registration in Divisions 1, 3 or 4 with an endorsement under s.20 as qualified to practise as a 'nurse practitioner' under the Health Professions Registration Act 2005 (Vic) will be titled 'registered nurse' under section 52 of the National Law with an endorsement as qualified to practise as a 'nurse practitioner', under section 95 of the National Law
  • Persons with Victorian registration in Division 2, who hold an endorsement as qualified in medication administration under s. 22 of the Health Professions Registration Act 2005 will have general registration as an 'enrolled nurse' under section 52 of the National Law
  • Persons with Victorian registration in Division 2, who do not hold an endorsement as qualified in medication administration will have general registration as an 'enrolled nurse' under section 52 of the National Law but with a notation on the register 'Does not hold a Board approved qualification in medication administration'
  • Persons with Victorian registration in Division 5 will be titled 'enrolled nurse' under section 52 of the National Law, presumably with a notation regarding medication administration.
