Nurses in General Practice
ERGPA’s nursing in general practice program (NiGP) vision is for every general practice within our divisional boundaries are supported and encouraged to employ or have access to a general practice nurse.
It is acknowledged that there is increased capacity in general practice provided by using the services of practice nurses which will improve the quality and accessibility of primary care for patients, particularly those with chronic disease and/or complex conditions. Our aim is to assist practices with improving patient health outcomes by employing a nurse as well as support and enhance the valuable work that nurses offer through education, forums and professional support.
Studies indicate that nurses can bring a number of benefits to a practice. These include improved health outcomes in chronic disease, managing the clinical environment through quality control, assistance in primary-acute care integration, promoting patient, carer and community well being, increased workforce capacity, the provision of practical and professional support to GPs and acting as an agent of connectivity in the range of services available to people attending general practice.
